Latest news from Breckland Brass Band 2009
After a very successful 2008, January 2009 saw the return of the band to practice after a much
needed rest from the many Christmas concerts and church carol services, a total of 13 Christmas
engagements in all.  The first rehearsal of 2009 began with a full attendance with the notable
exception of our solo horn player, Angela, who was expecting the first addition to her family.
The horn section all moved up one place, as is the way with brass bands, and the band
began rehearsing a selection of new music for the coming season..

Our first engagement of the year was at the Trinity Methodist Church, Bury St Edmunds, in
March, where the band played to a full church.  No spare seats left as far as the eye could
see.  This church has recently been completely renovated and included the removal of the
false ceiling, which now allows the full acoustics of the original building.

June saw the band at the local Euston Park Rural Rides playing throughout the afternoon and
in July the band travelled to Hunstanton where they played for two hours on the bandstand.

August and the band played a concert at the King’s House Gardens, Thetford, in front of a
large audience and two weeks later another concert at Ely in the new bandstand.
The last engagement of August was at Walsham-le-Willows which was holding an Open
Garden day.  The band was situated in close proximity to the village hall in which were being
sold teas and cakes including delicious meringues.  A number of the band had to be prised
away from the hall after the interval!

Whilst performing at Walsham-le-Willows our solo horn player appeared complete with new
baby daughter and made a welcome announcement that she would soon be back with the band
in time for the big charity concert in October at Brandon, news which was much welcomed by
the band and especially by the horn section who had been holding the fort and playing
magnificently in her absence.

In September the band played throughout the afternoon at the Riverside School at Mildenhall
and in October we put on our annual charity concert in Brandon.  The Brandon Charity Concert
has been a big feature of the band since 1984 when the band were asked to raise money for the
Yvonne Fletcher Appeal Fund.  Since that date the band hold a charity concert every year in
October in Brandon to raise money for both local and national charities and last October was our
26th consecutive annual concert.

Our final October outing was to RAF Marham where the band played incidental music at a
wedding reception.

In November the band played for the Mildenhall British Legion Service of Remembrance at
St Mary’s church in Mildenhall on the Friday evening before Remembrance Day and also
played for two Remembrance Day services, one at Thetford Center Parcs and the other in
Brandon on Sunday the 8th November.

Our last leg of 2009 arrived and the band performed a total of 13 carol services and Christmas
concerts.

At last we were able to have a few days off before 2010 arrived.  PHEW!!
